A Curious Little Cat

In my 2D Art and Design class, we started off with going over the 7 principals of Art and Design. Currently we are focusing on lines, with our first project being a full piece that pushes us to use lines in all sorts of different ways because we can only use line work here. This was a challenge for me, as I usually prefer to jump from sketch straight into blocking out colors! Hatching and line weight were absolutely my favorites to utilize here.

For this project, we started off with creating 4 different observational sketches, and chose one to push around for the final work. By ‘push around’ I mean we tried out different compositions by putting down some basic lines to use as guidelines to put a unique spin on the initial sketch.

As a quick side note, the paper I drew this on is actually white, but due to lights in my room it appears yellow here. I enjoy the warm tone for this article so I left it as is, but as a general tip when submitting your work online try to photograph it as accurate as possible! Cool toned lights or especially natural lighting are the best for this as they don’t tend to alter the colors of your work when photographed in my experience!

To get back on track, I really enjoyed this assignment, it opened my eyes to new ways to come up with compositions! I used to just block out shapes mainly, but using lines also forces you to get a little more creative so I can’t wait to utilize this more in the future!

Have a wonderful week!
