“Bound” in the Brooklyn Museum

Hello there and welcome back! I hope everyone had a great New Year! I happened to be in New York for the New Year and while I was there I visited the Brooklyn Museum. It was such an amazing experience because they had such a wide range of art in different styles and time periods. My art-history-heart loved it so much and wanted to stay to see everything, but the museum was so impressive that I only actually made it through two floors! So today and for the next few posts I figured I would share some of my favorite things I saw!

“Bound” by Kehinde Wiley

The first piece I wanted to talk about is a sculpture titled “Bound” by Kehinde Wiley. This was probably my favorite piece of all that I saw that day, although it was tough to pick a favorite. It was just so impressive and immediately captured my attention when I entered the gallery. It was a massive piece measuring 65 x 45 x 44 in. and weighing 1000 lb. I looked at it for a while, admiring how the braids tangle into each other, flowing to each side of the sculpture. It successfully makes the viewers eye move throughout the piece making it easy to capture attention. Here’s another view:

There is such great detail in the hair and the facial expressions that its hard to believe its bronze! I could really tell that there was a lot of really hard work and thought behind this piece. I highly recommend going to the Brooklyn Museum to see it in person! I hope you all loved it as much as I did!

Thanks!
