Needs!

Hi friends! I hope everyone is doing well and hopefully not feeling too stressed by our midterms rapidly approaching. This week, in my History & Theory of Art Therapy class, we studied object relations and self psychology. We then were instructed to create an image that represents our needs.

I decided to make a collage! I began by flipping through the magazines that we have in our art therapy studio, and finding images that represent the 5 most important things in my life: my family and friends, animals, the ocean, art, and music. I found an image of someone walking on the beach while the sunsets over the ocean, which I thought was perfect to represent my people and my love for the ocean. I found a rabbit to represent my love for animals and a ceramic pot to represent my love for art. I couldn’t find anything to represent my love for music, so I ended up drawing music notes on the collage itself later in the process. Next, I glued the images to a piece of Bristol paper to make them stiffer. I then cut the images out again, and glued them to a canvas that I painted gold. I played around with this collage a lot before deciding to use a canvas, but I felt like the canvas made it feel more permanent and official, almost like I was manifesting my needs into fruition. I then outlined all of the images with a black marker, and drew in my music notes. Then I put polka dots of my favorite colors all around the canvas.

Throughout this process, I realized that I only need five things to be happy and those five things are extremely achievable. I do not have all of them in my life right now, but I know I will have them all someday.

That’s all for today, friends! I hope you enjoyed reading and maybe will be inspired to create your own image of your needs.
