I recently created this multimedia piece that I thought was really cool and wanted to share on the blog this week! This is an updated version of the stipple bug illustration I had made a while back, which was a cute little bug that I had stippled out of fine sharpies. For a new class project, I was tasked with creating a multimedia work, and thought that reworking on the illustration would be perfect because I always wanted to do more with it.
I began by masking the bug in Photoshop to remove the white background that it was previously on to just get the illustration itself. I then started to scour the internet to find the perfect patch of greenery for the bug to rest on in the new piece, and settled on this really aesthetically pleasing photo of what looks to be a clover field. After that I added some pixelated flowers and placed them over actual flowers that were in the original photo because I thought that it would look really organic and I like the random natural placement of them in the finished piece. Once I had did all of that I felt sort of stuck because I felt it was missing something as the bug did not look so cohesive with its surroundings. But then I tried out the darken tool in Photoshop and made certain areas of the stipplebug and pixel flowers darker in order to achieve a sort of shadow effect. I also followed the natural shadow of the background image which I think took the piece to a whole other level and really helped the illustration blend into the new environment!!
