This week’s post will be on the shorter side because I’ve mostly been trying to get back in the groove of school this week now that we’re back from spring break. But I want to talk about something that’s been helpful for me in the ceramics studio. First, for context, I’ve been in a bit of a throwing rut. I haven’t been taking my time as much as I should, and I’ve been ripping through pieces like crazy. With that being said, the only thing that has helped me get out of this rut is doing something else. As simple as it sounds, getting off the wheel helped me slow down a bit. I managed to throw a pitcher during this rut and then wanted to make a handle for it. So I made a few handles and attached one of them to the pitcher, and just taking a half hour to focus on something different and more detailed was helpful to clear my head. When I hopped back on the wheel a couple of days later, I was able to slow down and be present in what I was throwing. I was thrilled to be making successful pieces again.
In addition to my newfound way to get out of a rut, I’ve also found a new source of inspiration after starting to watch a show called The Great Pottery Throw Down. Mark Chuck recommended that I watch it to expose myself to new techniques and such. I’ve been reminded of and introduced to many things that I want to try in the studio. I definitely want to try some more carving techniques and experiment with putting slips on the surface of pieces. I also want to try out some more glazing techniques, as I mentioned in my last post.
So, I know It’s been short, but I’ll have more to share in the next few weeks now that I’ve adjusted to school again. I can’t wait to share my findings. Have a great week, everyone 🙂
