Torso Sculpture

Clay Torso

The first project we are working on in sculpture is a large torso. We are all supposed to make either a male or female torso that is at least 2 feet tall out of clay. The position and body type of the torsos that each of us are making is completely different. It is a great opportunity for each of us to show our different talents and artistic styles.

My torso includes a head and two arms. The arms are wrapped above the head and the body has a twist to it. I also chose to have my torso be female. I really tried to put a lot of detail into the piece and I paid a lot of attention to the musculature in the stomach and abs.

After we have completed the clay torsos we are to put plastic dividers into it and then use plaster to make a mold. The dividers are to make it easier to separate the mold once the plaster has dried. Some of the people in class were able to divide their pieces simply in two since mine is a bit more complicated I had to divide it into four.

Those that divided theirs into two made the first half of the mold on Thursday and will make the second half on Tuesday. I made two of my quarters on Thursday and will make the other two on Tuesday. The two quarters that I made on Thursday were two that are diagonally across from each other.

Once we have completed making the molds we will discuss our options and decide what to pour into the molds to create the piece. We will then be able to keep the molds and make different copies of the pieces.

I’m very excited to continue to work on these pieces and can’t wait to see what everyone’s finished products are.
