At my local museum in upstate New York, “Women: A Gallery Anthology” is a powerful display of women’s creativity in both art and literature. Housed at the Roberson Museum in Binghamton, NY, this exhibition explores how emotions, aesthetics, and politics are expressed through different forms of art and writing. The collection includes a mix of folk and fine art paired with literature, all created by women.
The pieces on display come from Roberson’s collection and feature works from a variety of cultures, genres, and time periods. Each artwork was chosen because it shares a sense of emotion or meaning with the selected literary pieces.
Dr, Anne Mamary, a philosophy professor, selected the writings for the exhibit. Her background in feminist studies allows her to convey this deep understanding of women’s stories and their impact.
Visitors will find a variety of art forms on display, showcasing the versatility and talent of women artists. The exhibit features paintings in oil, acrylic, and watercolor, alongside drawings in charcoal and conte crayon. Prints like lithography and etchings add a dynamic layer, while fiber arts, including basket weaving, highlight traditional craft techniques. Sculptural works in clay, ceramics, and porcelain demonstrate the depth of skill across different media, This extensive range of art forms celebrates the richness of women’s artistic contributions.
