Experimenting With Flash

Last weekend was Marywood University’s Alumni and Family Weekend. I heard that one of the events that weekend was having a club style event with live music and colorful lights, so I decided this was a good opportunity for me to take photos of a live music event, since that is the kind of photography I am interested in. I used this fun method that Julie Potter taught me called shutter drag. This is a technique where you use direct flash and have a slow shutter speed and slightly move th camera when pressing the shutter button. This creates the effect that the subject is still but the lights behind the subject are in movement.

The settings I used to take these was 0″3 shutter speed, 100 ISO, and f/5.6. For my direct flash I had it set to f1/4. I had a lot of fun trying this method as it is a simple but effective trick. My goal with these photos was to show the fun energy that was there that night. Everyone was dancing and having a good time so I wanted to capture that.

The Chatter

Like I mentioned before, I am really interested in concert photography so I took this opportunity to take concert photos. I used shutter drag, direct flash, and no flash for these photos as I wanted to experiment with different lighting techniques.

This was my first time taking photos of a band playing live music so it was a good learning experience for me to practice on. I hope to take more photos like this in the future!
