Blogger Role: Photography

Major: Photography

I chose Marywood because I was amazed by their art facilities during a tour I took of Marywood’s campus in the spring of my senior year of high school. I had originally researched Marywood as a sophomore and was drawn to it for its close knit community.

I am majoring in Art because I have long been drawn to the arts, especially photography. While I am interested in various art forms like sculpture, mixed media, and collage, photography has always been my biggest interest and my favorite way to express myself. I fell in love with photography over the course of middle and high school, and have loved expanding on my skills and knowledge while attending Marywood University!

When I’m not in class, I’m usually going for walks, knitting or reading in my hammock, or of course taking photos either in or out of the studio.

So far, my favorite art class at Marywood was my portrait photography class I took this fall. I feel that my skills as a photographer are finally starting to really form and my interest and enjoyment of portrait photography has grown since taking the class. I got to work with other students and learn from what they have to offer and got to appreciate so many different approaches to the craft. The class also helped force me to break out of my shell more, working with models as well as learning to approach strangers to take their photos.

The coolest thing I’ve done at Marywood so far was probably the New York MET Museum trip this past fall. I spent the entire day wondering around experiencing so many truly impressive works of art, as well as getting to make my own. I used the trip as an opportunity to work on my Street photography and journalistic skills and very much enjoyed every second!

When I graduate I hope to work as a wedding and/or portrait photographer, though that is still subject to change! I love all aspects of photography and while I love portraiture and wedding photography especially, I do want to explore anything and everything that I can do with my degree and hope to do so after graduating!

I’d recommend the Art program at Marywood because the professors are deeply invested in your learning and have so much knowledge, skill, and experience to offer! Across all disciplines of art, whether it is your intended major or not, but even seemingly unrelated art disciplines; each class adds to your knowledge of art! Taking 2D and 3D design last year as a freshman I was very impressed and surprised at how much of the content I was learning translated into my photography and how it helped me improve! I have loved the education I’ve received my past three semesters here at Marywood and look forward to more!
