Blogger Role: Painting

Major: Studio Arts – Painting

Clubs: MUDM (Marywood University Dance Marathon), MAC (Marywood Activities Council), PASA (Pacers Against Sexual Assault), Tennis Team

I chose Marywood because it allowed me to explore a major in Painting. Marywood offers many BFA programs, providing options to explore. I visited Marywood and fell in love with the Insalaco Center for Studio Arts. I could picture my life as a student in the painting studios and dreamed of getting my own. Marywood also allowed me to continue playing tennis!

I am majoring in Art because I want to share its power by becoming an Art Teacher. I aim to become an upper-level Art Teacher specializing in Painting and Drawing. Since elementary school, I have been fortunate to have amazing art teachers who encouraged creativity and exploration. Because of their inspiration, I want to be a teacher like them and encourage other kids to be creative and express themselves through art.

When I’m not in class, I can be found in my studio making art or at campus events. As I am required to create art for class, I make sure to find time to create art for myself. On campus, there are many events that I can be found helping out with or participating in. In the warmer months, I can be found sitting in the Art Field painting, drawing, or just soaking in the sun.

So far, my favorite art class at Marywood was Painting II taught by Professor Collier Parker. In this class, we explored painting styles other than traditional still lives. We explored the Fauvist and Cubist movements as well as mixed media. My favorite project was the mixed media two-point perspective interior view. I enjoyed exploring the building and approaching the canvas differently.

The coolest thing I’ve done at Marywood so far was become a member of Marywood University Dance Marathon (MUDM). This is a 12-hour dance that supports the Lehigh Valley Reilly Children’s Hospital. I have enjoyed being a part of a community that is supporting children and families close to the area. The event is incredibly impactful and provides me a chance to stand for those who cannot.

When I graduate I plan on continuing my education in a MAT program. I want to become an Art teacher. I began teaching in high school and knew this was the career for me. I enjoy working with kids of all ages and teaching art. I look forward to working at a school and sharing my love of art.

I’d recommend the Art program at Marywood because it has personally allowed me to grow my skill and knowledge within the field. It is amazing for people who want to focus on a specific area and gain great technique within that. The professors within the department are knowledgeable and highly skilled making them easy to learn from. The Art program also allows each student to explore different areas of interest as they progress through the program.
