Blogger Role: Ceramics

Major: Art Therapy

Minor(s): Ceramics

I chose Marywood because I live in the Scranton area and dreamed of attending college here when I was younger. Once I decided I wanted to major in art therapy and toured the art department, it didn’t take long to feel like I was in the right place.

I am majoring in Art because it is my passion and driving force. I think that creativity is an important element of every person’s life. Humans need to be creative to feel fulfilled. When I am making art I learn so much, about myself, the world, the medium in which I’m working, and how it all comes together. I am an admirer of art as much as I am a creator and I enjoy learning everything I can about the subject and experimenting with different ideas. To me, art is a way of looking at the world and sharing how we each individually see it.

When I’m not in class, I am often found spending extra time in the ceramics studio, and on weekends I love playing in nature and finding inspiration. I am also often in the kitchen cooking up a yummy vegetarian meal.

So far, my favorite art class at Marywood was Ceramics. I was excited to start the class because it was something I had no experience with beforehand and I had no idea that I would enjoy it so much. Working with clay has now become my current favorite medium and for now, the ideas feel endless.

The coolest thing I’ve done at Marywood so far was make a dragon head in my Sculpture class. I made it as my final project and I bit off more than I could chew but I still managed to make something I’m proud of and I learned so much in the process. I worked with mostly papier-mâché and aluminum foil for this project and one of the most impactful takeaways I found was that you can make art out of ANYTHING. You just need to think out of the box and learn good problem-solving skills. This was also the project that opened my eyes to how much I enjoy making 3D art which I didn’t know about myself before that class.

When I graduate I hope to mesh my love of 3D studio arts with art therapy and work with the community to help them on their healing creative journeys. I also dream of continuing to make ceramics and hopefully get my name out there one day.

I’d recommend the Art program at Marywood because the instructors of this program are so knowledgeable and passionate about what they do, it is contagious. I admire all of the art instructors deeply and feel truly grateful that I can learn from them. Not only are the instructors great teachers they are also amazing artists with years of experience under their belt. They have much to teach us if we are willing to listen.
