Art Opportunities

Artist Talks, Lectures, Conferences, and More
Each semester Marywood provides opportunities for students, faculty, and the community to engage with professionals in the arts. We are delighted to host the following guest speaker series: Distinguished Visiting Artists Series, Connect Speaker Series, Fresh Perspectives Guest Artist Lectures, Stretch Conference Speakers, and Visiting Artist Talks. In addition, the art department hosts a variety of gallery openings and artist talks, as well as providing Art Education and Art Therapy symposia throughout the year.

Senior Art Exhibition
The Senior Art Exhibition is the culmination of the students’ undergraduate studies and showcases the artists they have grown to become as well as their potential path in the arts. The under-graduate group exhibition presents work in the concentrated studies of art education, art therapy, and studio arts concentrations in graphic design, illustration, painting, and photography. A closure experience for graduating art majors, participation in the group exhibition at Marywood University is a requirement of the Department of Visual Arts. Students receive a bachelor of fine arts (BFA) or a bachelor of arts (BA) degree, depending on their area of study.

First Friday Scranton
First Friday Scranton is a 501(3) non-profit, volunteer-supported organization composed of a Board of Directors and Advisory Council that organize, promote and market a free art walk held on the first Friday of every month at dozens of galleries and businesses around downtown Scranton. First Friday features a wide variety of cultural events found in some of the city’s best restaurants and cafes, as well as galleries, boutiques, and other small businesses. All events associated with First Friday take place from 6-9PM in a walk-able, close knit footprint, though a trolley bus is available to provide shuttle service at designated stops. First Friday serves as a conduit to artists, connecting them to prospective venues, art lovers seeking entertainment, and venues looking to attract new customers. All of these are unified under the vision of using the arts to revitalize downtown Scranton. For maps of venues and information about showing your work, visit http://www.firstfridayscranton.com/

Art Internships
Marywood University acknowledges the necessity of integrating academic course work and practical experience in the total learning process within many major areas of study. As a result, the University maintains strong and active affiliations with a number of cooperating agencies wherein students can gain these competencies, typically as upper division students. These arrangements are defined specifically at the departmental level and include titles such as: “field experience,” “fieldwork,” “clinical practicum,” “internship,” and “student teaching.” Each is designed to provide the opportunity of transferring theoretical paradigms to practical situations. Marywood Career Development Center lists local internship opportunities.  In addition, the art department has standing internship opportunities with many local companies that we can easily direct you to.  For additional questions about internships in your area, please contact your faculty advisor or the Art Department Chair at Phone: (570) 348-6278 or art@marywood.edu
