Major: Art Therapy
I chose Marywood because it’s the only school in the area that offers an art therapy program. I’m lucky enough to live nearby so I can study the major I was most interested in. Art therapy is a major I believe should be offered in every college.
I am majoring in Art because Art has always been the most important thing in my life, and on top of that, making art for people is something I value too. I use art as my love language and share it with everyone in my life. I chose to major in art because it’s my passion, and I believe in the sentiment that your life’s work should be something you love.
When I’m not in class, I’m hanging out with friends, figure skating, making more art, shopping, or playing video games.
So far, my favorite art class at Marywood was my intro to art therapy class last year because we were able to put more personal touches on our artwork through the great prompts that were offered. We made altered books and each page told a story of its own. I look back through the pages of that book and I’m proud of what I created and what it means to me.
The coolest thing I’ve done at Marywood so far was join this blog and visit the MET in NYC last spring.
When I graduate I will continue on to grad school to further my education in art therapy. I want to work with kids and provide affordable therapy to as many as I can. Something I’m also interested in is becoming a children’s book illustrator. My mom was an elementary school librarian growing up so I’ve always been surrounded by children’s books and I’ve always loved the art in them.
I’d recommend the Art program at Marywood because there’s so much room for one’s own personal art style to shine through. You can get creative with every assignment and there’s plenty of resources offered to help you in the art making process. Classes are also small enough so each student can express their needs and can be one-on-one with professors.
