With the holidays approaching, a variety of galleries off campus are featuring seasonal specialties.
One of these is the AFA Gallery on 101 Penn Avenue. Running until Friday, January 3rd, the Winter Members Show displays a range of artworks from gallery members in any medium or size. These artworks will be for sale if interested. Keep an eye on their website for calls for work! These are a great opportunity to display your artwork and add experience to your portfolio as a young artist. They also have workshops if you’re interested in seeking some extra experience off of campus. Stay up to date on events through their Instagram.
Now, I am from the Christmas City, also known as Bethlehem. If you’re interested in visiting, there are some great galleries and events constantly happening. Especially during the Christmas season.
One of these galleries is known as the Yaralov Gallery. On display are beautiful scenes from my area, often coated in an iconic layer of snow. Characteristic buildings like Moravian University (founded in 1742, churches are a part of the UNESCO heritage site), Hotel Bethlehem (historic hotel built in 1922), or The Steel Stacks (created steel for ships, buildings, guns, and armor) are oftentimes featured. This gallery also has many of it’s works posted online, so take a peak or visit it in person sometime!
Another gallery from Bethlehem is opening up their seasonal exhibit called, A Winter’s Tale. This gallery exhibition runs until December 21st. There’s also an online gallery available for those who can’t visit in person. Works from Sue Adair, Judy Lalingo, and Linda Rossin will be featured. Take a peak at the online gallery for some wintery inspiration!
Maybe you’re not interested in galleries? Try out some of the artsy events in the Scranton area!
Wednesday, December 18 there’s a pysanky egg decorating class. During it, you’ll be guided on how to create the non-edible Christmas eggs based on Ukrainian tradition. The Lackawanna County Library offers great events and classes year-round. Many of these are fun crafts. You can subscribe to their calendar to keep up to date on new events as, many of them get filled up quickly! So be sure to stay tuned for some creative experimentation.
Or maybe visit some Christmas light displays for some inspiration. Exploring value through extreme light and dark can be a ton of fun. Especially when there’s pretty colors and lights involved~!
(Marywood will be having their own Christmas Tree Lighting in the Rotunda of the Liberal Arts Center. Be sure to check it out if you get the chance!)
Happy holidays everyone, stay toasty, and stay creative!
