This week in my painting class we finished working on our 3rd still life, I’m still not a big fan of still life’s but I do think I’m getting better at them.
This still life focused on using a full palette and complimentary colors. We started it by making a 1 x 1” grid on our canvas, and sketching on top of it. This was probably the fastest I’ve been at getting proportions right for a still life too! I really only made one single sketch on canvas for this and didn’t have to fix too much.
I really loved that we could use a full palette for this painting, I’m not a big fan of limited palettes and feel I have a decent enough grasp on color theory to color match.
I did not love the grid. I got super confused when trying to paint the green cube and it looked extremely flat for a few secessions. It took me a while to get used to not blending and just laying colors down next to each other.
But this was a really great exercise for learning about color and color theory! I definitely learned a lot about colors and their compliments, and how to layer them properly.
