The Duality

Hello friends! I hope everyone has enjoyed their last couple of days of summer break! I cannot believe that school is starting up again on Monday already. The summer truly flew by so quickly! For my final blog of the summer, I wanted to share a little bit about a piece of artwork I recently finished that I decided to call “The Duality.”

I created this piece using acrylic paint along with posca paint markers on canvas. I started by painting the entire background black to give it a dark, mysterious base. Once that dried, I layered a turquoise wave across the center to create movement. Next, I used some old sketches from my Figure Drawing I class of the human body. I traced two of these figures onto the canvas and decided to give them celestial heads: I drew a sun above one figure where the head would be, and a moon above the other.

After that, I painted the sun figure yellow and the moon figure gray. I wanted them to have contrast while still feeling connected. To accentuate the celestial aspects, I painted the sun gold and the moon silver. At the bottom of the canvas, I added seaweed that grows upward and wraps around the legs of each figure, almost like it’s pulling them down. Finally, I outlined the figures, the wave, and the seaweed with posca paint markers to sharpen everything.

“The Duality” is meant to be a little unusual, even slightly unsettling—something that makes you stop and look twice.

I hope you enjoyed reading this blog and liked my most recent painting!
