At this month’s meeting for MUSATA, the Marywood University’s Student Art Therapy Association, members painted pumpkins to get into the fall spirit. Kicking back and enjoying each other’s company was a nice way to start the week.
There wasn’t a pattern to follow, specific requirements, or a guide for how everyone painted their pumpkins; that made it much more interesting to see the end result.
This is my pumpkin. I originally didn’t know what I wanted to do with my mine, but I heard someone suggest papier-mâché so I decided I wanted to papier-mâché my pumpkin. I can’t remember the last time that I papier-mâchéd something, so I thought it would be fun to go back to elementary school art class memories.
I decided that the papier-mâché on it’s own wasn’t the look I wanted, so I decided to watercolor over the paper. I used very watered down orange, yellow, brown, and green. I really like how it looked in the end.
What do you think?
Even though there was a small group at the meeting this week, it still was nice to enjoy everyone’s company and just create. Also just to see how everyone decorated their pumpkins.
Seeing everyone’s pumpkins together was really intersting. Everyone had creative freedom with their pumpkin, and everyone who was there is in Art Therapy, so it was nice to just create just for ourselves. Being in school as an art student can be a little challenging when it comes to creating your own work of art. For me personally, having an expectation in my art classes make it difficult for me to come up with my own direction for art I do on my own time.
Don’t get me wrong, I love having a plan, but sometimes I just want to create with the flow. That is how I felt with this activity.
Some people had inspiration:
- The cat was inspired by the artist’s cat, Penny.
- The pink and blue one was inspired by their Cotton Candy Alani.
- The artist saw a butterfly earlier that day, and decided to add a butterfly to their pumpkin.
Others, like myself, did not have inspiration. Both ways with creating is completely acceptable! That is the beauty of creation, and that is what went through my head during this meeting.
If you also feel like getting into the fall spirit, maybe you too can sit back and decorate something fall themed! Whether you have inspiration, an end goal, “directions” or nothing at all planned, it is a great way to encourage your inner artist!
That’s all for now, thanks for reading!
