It’s time once again for the Waverly Community House to start preparations for the NEPA Film Festival! 2024’s Film Fest is set for the weekend of April 12-14 with an exciting lineup to come. While the films are still being screened and chosen, I thought I’d share the workshops that will be presented by WVIA as described on their press release.

“Create Films, Not Content” presented by WVIA’s Alexander Monelli – Saturday April 13th. The ultimate goal of the workshop is to ignite creative passion and a desire to create impactful work that lasts in a world where bland, repetitive content is all most companies/producers/studios are interested in producing.

“Storytelling Unleashed: Creating Films with the Camera in Your Pocket” presented by WVIA’s Tim Novotney – Saturday April 13th. This workshop will focus on the innovative use of smartphones in filmmaking. Tim will explore the potential of these devices in creating high-quality films, delving into various aspects like shooting techniques, sound capture, and framing. The core message is that storytelling excellence can be achieved without the necessity for expensive, high end equipment.

“How Much ‘Bio’ Goes Into a Biopic? / Licensing, Releases, & Fair Use” presented by WVIA’s Kris Hendrickson & Ben Payavis II – Sunday April 14th. The most effective way to bring history to life is to see it through the eyes of the person who lived it. One individual’s accomplishments can have far-reaching impacts on whole industries, cultures, and even the world. Your collaborators want to celebrate the moments of that person’s life, but you want to present a larger view of the world they changed. You only have so much time to fill; how do you balance the intimate details with the canvas of history? In addition, learn more about securing talent, location, material releases, pursuing music and archival licensing, and Fair Use.

“Promotional Best Practices: How to Show Them What You Got” presented by WVIA’s Kara Washington – Sunday April 14th. This Workshop will cover the process of creating, designing, and launching a promotional campaign, including how to write a press release and who to send it to, what should go into a promotional video and what to avoid, how to export your video for multiple media platforms, making graphics, and other tips. Whether you’re an aspiring or seasoned filmmaker, you’ll learn the best practices to grab your audience’s attention.

The time for these workshops is yet to be announced, but they are well worth a visit. Films will be chosen and scheduled soon. The festival will include an incredible opening reception, two days of nonstop films, and awards! Be sure to check in once the schedule is out, and stop by for some incredible work.
