Student Spotlight: Fiona Wenger

Phobia

Phobia

Welcome back to another installment of Marywood’s finest artists! With all of this cold, snowy weather, I’m so excited to warm your hearts with this new student spotlight! This student really caught my eye before break with her incredible Gift Tag designs that had been hanging on the second floor of the Insalaco Center for Studio Arts! I had never seen such amazing Christmas Gift tags, and I just had to find out who was behind such genius. Fast forward to this semester, and I have had the privilege of meeting the amazing creator! Without further ado, I present to you…

Fiona Wenger

Class: 2029

Major: Graphic Design

Clubs: Concert Choir

I am majoring in Graphic Design because…

I always was obsessed with doodling and making things look pretty. I mostly want to be in graphic arts because I think it would be really cool to have my art work on something that people can buy. I want people who I don’t even know repping my art on a can or sweatshirt.

The kinds of things that inspire me are…

My parents, because they are both artists, but mainly my mom. She went down the same route as I am now, and I hope to be as good of a designer as her when I get a real job.

My favorite art class so far was…

First semester 2D Design with Professor Georisell Vazquez. She really is the realest professor out there, as well as an effective teacher.

When I am not in class…

I am either drawing my boyfriend in my sketchbook and hanging it on my wall, doing my nails, or in the studio doing projects with my friends.

The coolest thing I have done at Marywood so far was…

Decorate my room, honestly. I used to want to be an interior designer before I switched to graphic design, but it’s still a passion of mine. That or going to Dorney Park for free!

When I graduate…

I want to design company logos, product labels, shirts, hats, anything.

I would recommend the Art program at Marywood because…

It is very diverse. There are so many different routes to take such as 3D modeling and sculpture, woodworking, digital design and animation, art therapy, etc.

What excites me most about Art is…

Getting to keep my hands moving and to spew my ideas out into something pretty.

Are you currently working on any personal projects, and if so, what are they?

I am not really working on a project, per se, but I have been doing a lot of nails on campus (mine and other peoples).

What is your favorite type of media and how did you discover your love for it?

My favorite media is digital art. I first started when I was probably 8 when I got my ipad and downloaded drawing apps. I would draw little characters and flowers and mandalas for hours and hours.

Putting aside any current limitations, what would be your ideal studio day? What would you do? Where would you work? What would you work with?

My ideal studio day would be sitting in a comfy chair, drawing something on Adobe Photoshop in a nice, windowed office with a snack by my side.

There you have it! The fantastic Fiona Wenger! I, for one, am made speechless by her designs! The designs Fiona has made for her nails are genuinely the most gorgeous I have ever seen! The composition and harmony in these painted designs is impeccable, and her color palettes are on point. I also love how the nails, in my opinion, have a certain rhythm to them.

Her piece, “Phobia” is so evocative and expressive as well. The three panels each seem to evoke a different sense of fear within me and demonstrate a high level of skill with different styles and media. Her bright colors work so well to create a sense of terror within her piece, drawing the observer nearer to the figure drawn.

Overall, I am incredibly impressed by Fiona’s versatility and flexibility in her art. Not only does she tackle a diverse range of media, but she draws in a variety of different styles with absolute excellency. I am extraordinarily excited to see what else she creates over these next semesters here at Marywood!

Stay warm!
