Student Spotlight: Sarah McLain

Welcome back everyone! I hope you have all been enjoying the beautiful colors in the fall landscape these past weeks! The way the light has shone through the amber and gold leaves is truly spectacular, and these natural wonders only lasts for a short time!

Speaking of spectacular… I have another amazing student artist to share with you all! Her art has always impressed me with its detail, posing, and creativity. As a lover of fantasy and literature myself, her heroic and medieval scenes have caught my eye for a while now. I have often seen her character designs hanging on the walls of Insalaco too, but it was not until now that I have had the privilege of receiving a glimpse of her process through our shared General Illustration class this past semester. You know her already through her incredible work here as our On Campus Art News Blogger

I am majoring in Art because…

I’m majoring in art because it’s always been such a huge part of my life. My mom is an artist so I’ve been surrounded by art. When I started noticing improvement in my art, it only made me want to create more.

The kinds of things that inspire me are…

Some things that inspire are my friends and family! They always drive me to create more and more. As far as my artwork itself, video games are my largest inspiration. The environments and characters are always so fascinating to me.

My favorite art class so far was…

So far my favorite art class was Digital Illustration, which I had earlier in the spring. It was really fascinating and I enjoyed all of the projects so much. It sparked the creation of all of my original characters.

Wishing Well

When I am not in class…

When I’m not in class, I’m either drawing my own characters or playing video games with my friends. Video games are my favorite and least favorite pastime to have.

The coolest thing I have done at Marywood so far was…

So far the coolest thing I’ve done at Marywood was to take the trip to the MOMA last year. I haven’t gotten the chance to see New York that much, so to be able to spend the day there along with other people who enjoy art, made it so enjoyable.

When I graduate…

When I graduate, I plan to work for a gaming company. I want to help create the same video games that shaped me so much.

I would recommend the Art program at Marywood because…

I recommend the Art program because it truly is life changing. I’ve meet so many amazing people and my art skills have improved so much. I genuinely wouldn’t be where I am now without Marywood.

What excites me most about Art is…

What excites me most is the joy of creation. Seeing my art go through the stages of development really helps keep me going.

What skills, themes, techniques, etc are you focusing on right now in your art?

Currently, I’m focusing on working on my art style so I have the desired effect, as well as my anatomy.

Are you currently working on any personal projects, and if so, what are they?

Personally, I’m working on an illustration to announce that my commissions are now open on vgen!

How do you balance your time creating art with your time outside of the studio?

This is one bit where I struggle quite a bit. I tend to take a break from drawing every now and then when I feel like I’m getting burnt out. I also tend to draw from media that I enjoy, when my friends are busy. I also like to spend time away from my iPad, and I draw at nighttime.

Sarah’s eye for the fantastical is incredible! I love how in all of her work she utilizes a very set, refined, medieval-like style. More impressive is the fact that her characters retain their likeness between different drawings, and are each characterized uniquely. The lighting and textures in her pieces also really draw my eye! Zooming in on her drawings is a real treat, especially for her piece “False Savior,” as the texture and detail is impeccable. If I were a fantasy writer, I would 100% want Sarah to be doing the book illustrations, without a doubt!

If you would like to see more of Sarah’s artwork, or you would like to commission her for a piece of your very own, definitely check her out at https://vgen.co/Silvertopp22 !!

I have had so much fun sharing Sarah’s art with you today! Stay tuned for more, and see you soon!
