Tom Gongliewski: A Craftsman at Marywood

Shop Manager/Studio Technician Guest Blogger: Tom Gongliewski

Tom Gongliewski: Tom Gongliewski is a true craftsman, and a vital part of the Marywood University community. As Shop Manager/Technician in the School of Architecture, he’s been guiding students and shaping the creative landscape for the past two decades. Meet Tom.

His journey began in 2004 as a Marywood University Maintenance Group Leader, but his passion for woodworking quickly took center stage. He transitioned to leading the Woodshop in 2012, where his unique approach has inspired countless students.

Tom’s passion for woodworking was ignited by his Uncle Tommy, a skilled craftsman who instilled in him a deep appreciation for the art of carpentry. This early influence shaped his unique artistic philosophy: to transform the ordinary into the extraordinary. He takes discarded furniture, often destined for the landfill, and transforms it into unique and unexpected creations. He prefers working with softwoods like pine and poplar, and his style is a blend of simplicity and subtle elegance – think clean lines with unexpected touches of brass or unique trim.

Inspired by his father, Charles, Tom also developed a passion for metalworking. He’s a skilled craftsman, creating stunning lamps and light fixtures that illuminate spaces across campus. Ever notice those metal benches on campus with the wood backing? Tom made those!

Outside the workshop, Tom enjoys crafting concrete molds, restoring vintage motorcycles, and spending time with his feathered friends. He even collaborated with Marywood’s Birditure Club to design and build birdhouses that now add a touch of nature to the campus.

And speaking of innovation, Tom holds a significant place in Marywood history. He co-invented the first-ever U.S. patent issued to the university – an architectural structure with an expandable frame.

A graduate of Johnson School of Technology with an Associate’s Degree in Electronics and Fluidic Technology, Tom brings a wealth of knowledge and a deep love for his craft to Marywood. He’s more than just a technician – he’s a mentor, an artist, and an integral part of the vibrant creative community here.

We invite you to stop by and meet Tom in his woodshop, located on the ground floor of the Insalaco Center for Studio Arts.
