Student Spotlight: Cecelia Otis

Happy Halloween everyone! 🎃 I’ve been loving all the spooky art in the Insalaco building and everyone’s outfits this season. I hope everyone has a spooky holiday this year and gets plenty of treats! This week’s treat includes a creator who loves an array of different artistic mediums. From sculpting, to music, to digital art, she tries and accomplishes them all in her own way! This artist caught my eye during my Color Photo class exhibition this past Spring semester. She created such an ethereal set of photos with her vibrant colors, compositions, and photo arrangements. This ethereal artist is…

Cecelia Otis

Graduation Year: 2027

I am majoring in Art because

I want to have a career in which I do something I love and enjoy. Art has always been an important part of my life, so I can’t really imagine myself pursuing anything else. I love creating new things, whether it be a new painting or photography. I want to keep creating art.

The kinds of things that inspire me are…

music and the world around me. I am always amazed by the beauty of nature and love capturing its beauty in my artworks. I love seeing how the light reflects on water and leaves and try to recreate it as best as I can. Music is another thing that inspires me. Whenever I am feeling down or upset, it helps calm me and draw me back into myself. I like to create while listening to music. It helps me focus on my work and makes the time fly by. It feels very meditative.

My favorite art class so far was…

Three-Dimensional Design with Prof. Patrick McLane because it allowed me to explore working with sculptures and a 3D medium. It really taught me how to create art to view in the round (on all sides) instead of the 2D drawing form I’m used to. I enjoyed the hands-on process and really pushed myself out of my comfort zone with my art.

When I’m not in class…

I’m usually hanging out with my friends. We like to go off campus and explore the area around Marywood. My roommate and I like to go to Target every once and a while, so we’re usually there as well. However, when I am not in class or with my friends, I am at dance class every weekend. I am an Irish step dancer with the Emerald Isle Step Dancers in Pittston, PA so I go home every weekend and spend my time at my dance studio.

The coolest thing I have done at Marywood so far was…

create a cohesive portrait photo set for the Color Photography show last Spring semester in my Color Photography class with Prof Sue Jenkins. I am pretty new in Photography at the moment since I just added it on as a minor last year. I have always dabbled a little bit in landscape/nature photography, but I have never done people. So, for the class exhibition, I decided to push myself out of my comfort zone and create a series of portrait photographs with my friends. They came out so good, and I found a way of editing that I like to further emphasize the feel of the photographs. Overall, it was one of my favorite projects to date, and I can’t wait to do something like that again.

When I graduate…

I hope to pursue a career in Graphic Design. However, I’m not quite sure what kind of Graphic Design work I want to do yet. I thought about doing Entertainment or Book Cover work, but I’m not 100% on it. I’m planning on using my minor in Photography once I graduate to help with my work, or to use as a fall back. Either way, I want to pursue some kind of career in the art field.

What excites me most about art is…

getting the chance to create something with my own hands. It is a fascinating concept to me the amount of incredible artwork that people are capable of with just a piece of paper and a few pencils. I love sitting down with a blank piece of paper or canvas, and seeing what I can produce that day. Art is and always will be one of my driving passions and I love being able to create something.

One of my favorite memories with art was…

making my first painting at my art class. I started taking art classes outside of school in fourth grade. The first painting I dedicated to was a glass painting of a little kitten sitting in a field. My mom still has it hung up on the wall in my house and every time I look at it, I think, “Wow, that’s really bad.” But I know that if I didn’t start there, I wouldn’t have gotten where I am today. So, although it is not my best work, I am infinitely proud of that little kitten sitting in a field.

I really appreciate how Cece is willing to try so many different art mediums and still incorporates her style of bright colors. Have a fun and safe Halloweekend coming up! What’s your favorite go to style? Ciao! ~Conchita
