Sculpture Exhibition

Students in Stephen Colley‘s mixed media sculpture class have put together a sculpture exhibition featuring their artwork which will be held in the Kresge Gallery inside the Insalaco building at Marywood. The exhibit features work from the six students and their hard work over the semester.

The exhibition will open on November 7 at 5 pm. Students are encouraged to attend and check out the work that was created by the students and their professor. They hope to spread the word about some of the processes and work that goes into creating the sculptures, as well as share how fun and involved the sculpture-making process actually is.

In the Gallery

Each student created a different torso sculpture, with some students creating one version, while others created multiple different casts. The sculptures all stand about 2 feet tall, but they vary in proportions due to the students’ stylistic choices The sculptures are made of different materials, such as plaster, concrete, clay, or wax. Additionally, students used natural materials such as large stumps and rocks which they collected by going outside and finding them, which they later used as bases for their sculptures.

Included with the sculptures created by the students in the mixed media class, instructor Stephen Colley will also have some of his own work included in the exhibit.

Also included in the exhibit are tiny wax sculptures that are meant to be doorknobs or wall hooks. These sculptures were then painted to look like metal. Additionally, the students are considering casting these wax sculptures in bronze.

Behind the Scenes

When creating the sculptures, the students started by creating the base in clay. They had the creative freedom to create either a male or female torso in whichever style the student chose. After the clay base was done, they divided it up and then created the mold using plaster. Once the mold was completed, the students then poured cement and carved away the mold. Finally, the students then smoothed the sculpture by filing the rough edges before covering the sculpture with wax and polishing them.
