Like most people making the leap from a STEM based major to Art, I wanted to be practical about it. I had reservations about being an art major, as many artists will tell you, it’s not exactly easy to make a living off of art. Not to say it’s necessarily hard either, but having some doubts about entering this field is not exactly unwarranted.
So, if you have doubts about entering a strictly art related field like Illustration, Animation, Painting, Ceramics, etc., Arts Administration might be for you. Not only will you get the art aspect, 2D and 3D Design, Art History, Music and Theater classes, etc. You also get the business and managerial aspect.
If art isn’t your forte but you love art and being around it, getting to see how it’s made and interacting with artists, this is the perfect major for you. You could work in galleries or museums, plan events, manage people and budgets, and so much more. There is a very business side to this major. You don’t have to be an artist yourself to want to surround yourself with art.
Or, if art, music, and theater, is your forte, this major is great for letting you see behind the scenes so to say. There are opportunities for you to get hands-on experience working in galleries, networking with other artists, and getting internships at galleries or museums. Getting to submerge yourself in these career options early will give you a better idea of how it works. It could give you the leg-up you need to get your own work in galleries, or just give you the chance to meet some really cool artists.
All in all, arts administration can give you so many career opportunities no matter which part of the art world you’re looking to enter.
