Classes have started back up and that means the return of me sharing and talking about super fun and awesome animations!
In my 3D Animation class this week, we talked about different kinds of animations and classified what counts as a 3d animation. One kind that really stood out to me was pixilation. You may be asking yourself, what is pixilation? Pixilation is a form of stop motion where, instead of moving around inanimate objects, the motion of humans is taken frame by frame and creates this really interesting look.
In class, we watched the video Neighbours by Norman McLaren:
Released in 1952, Neighbours showcases, well, two neighbors who discover this magical, singing daisy in the middle of their lawn. After some bizarre moments with the daisy that I can only describe as a fever dream, the neighbors end up fighting and at the end both die.
The movement is so bizarre yet interesting, and I really do believe that the effect would be gone if he decided to just film this normally. He has some other interesting works involving animation (like poking holes directly into film), so I highly suggest checking more of him out!!
I found this video to be very entertaining and it introduced me to an amazing new form of animation that I had never heard of before. My first assignment in my 3d animation class is to make a 5-30 second animation using Maya, stop motion, etc. Of course, after learning about this animation form, I will be doing pixilation for said assignment and getting my friends to be the actors.
