Lilac’s Quest – An Animation

Howdy!

Today I wanted to share an animation that is very special to me. It was made by…drum-roll please… me!!! A year ago from when I’m writing this (April 24, 2026), I finished an animation for my 3D Animation class in high school (April 24, 2025). I had taken this class from my Freshman year of high school to my Senior year and each year I improved so much. Unfortunately, I only have access to my animation from last year as I would love to share the others that I’ve done!

The animation starts off with Lilac, a girl who was abandoned and raised at an orphanage. One morning, she’s feeling adventurous and wants to go out exploring the woods. After receiving permission, she leaves the castle town and heads to the woods. In the woods, a bunny guides her to a sword stuck in a hollowed-out tree stump that is full of a strange red liquid. Upon pulling out the sword, she is greeted by the spirit that resides within it. Lilac follows the spirit’s request and allows the sword to lead her to a cave that contains a bone dragon. Upon defeating the bone dragon, the spirit gifts her the power to call upon him and manifest his sword whenever she wants.

This animation is a rough idea of a comic I wanted to create (and still do want to create). I’ve been working on my figure drawing skills and what not and the comic may not actually be too far off from being created…but that’s a topic for another day.

This animation was made using 3DS Max, which isn’t the greatest platform when it comes to doing character animation. I didn’t face many struggles when working on this animation, which makes sense considering this was my fourth year taking the class and I learned a lot about the program.

My greatest struggle definitely came with sculpting the body. This had been my only animation where I really tried to make a person and considering it was a first attempt at really doing so, I think I did pretty well. Now that I know more about human anatomy, I think I could make an even better one!

In the fall I will be taking a 3D animation class and it’s one I’m really looking forward to! I love making 3D animations and it’s something I definitely need to get back into doing.

Have you ever done any animations of your own or think you may want to one day?

Thanks for reading and be sure to look out for my next post!
