Painting Process

For this week’s blog post, I would like to talk about a type of art process that is relatively new to my work. This is something I am certain other artists have done, but I would like to share with all of you readers how I have incorporated it into my own art!

Many art students are familiar with the concept of thumbnails. For those of you who may not be so versed in the creative process that comes along with many design and studio courses, thumbnails are a way to get ideas visualize quickly. They typically manifest as quick doodles or tiny, loose drawings. When approaching my color field paintings recently, I decided to try out a different way of producing thumbnails. The paintings I am planning to create in this style are relatively large scale and with the fluidity of abstract art, a simple pencil and paper may not always get the job done for thumbnails. So, I’ve made some small, quick watercolor pieces to consider (and one that has actually become actualized, as you may have noticed) as compositions for larger paintings. Below are two examples of these color compositions.

What do you think? Do they remind you of anything?
