I hope everyone is enjoying their summer so far! After being out of class for a couple weeks now, I suddenly found a lot of time that I didn’t have during both the fall and spring semesters. Due to this, I really wanted to create a personal artwork featuring two of my original characters, Mai and Nyx.
I created Mai and Nyx for my Digital Illustration class in the spring. I quickly became attached to them, and I wanted to draw them more. Although their story is still in the rough stages, I knew that I wanted there to be romantic tension between the two, due to them being childhood friends. When talking to one of my friends, she really wanted me to draw both of them together.
This then inspired me to draw. I think it’s fair to say that I was either burnt out or going through a burst of art block. I haven’t felt the want to draw anything, but her suggestion gave me the idea to create.
When drawing this, I realized that this piece would be the first artwork that I drew… just because I can, in such a long time. Over the past few years, most of my drawings have either been for assignments or for a competition.
And here’s the final piece! It is far from the best artwork I’ve created, but that’s okay! I’m slowly overcoming the idea that not everything has to be perfect in order for me to enjoy the results.
Over the summer, I plan to make the most of my time by studying other artists and improving both my skills and motivation.
