Student Spotlight: Andre Vizcarrondo

Hello and welcome back! I hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving break coming up and get their well deserved rest for the remainder of the semester. This week’s Student Spotlight artist creates work based on his experiences throughout his days as a first year master’s student in Marywood’s experiential Masters in Art Therapy program. This expressive artist is…

Andre Vizcarrondo

Major: Art Therapy

Minor: Business

Year: First Year, MA Art Therapy

Clubs: Marywood University Art Therapy Association (MUSATA) and Shutterbug’s Photography Club

I am majoring in Art because

Art therapy allows me to combine my passion in art and my desire to be someone who can provide a safe space for healing, self-expression, and self-discovery.

The kinds of things that inspire me are…vast.

A lot of my artistic inspiration comes from emotions I want to release. The more complex the emotions, the more layers of meaning my artwork has. I often express these emotions utilizing symbols and metaphors, though I also like to incorporate songs that relate to these emotions from time to time. I also draw inspiration from nature, especially in my photography.

What excites me most about art is…

that Art is a very important vessel of self-expression for me, and my time here at Marywood University has exposed me to many different medias I would not have had the opportunity to access or master otherwise. I have been working hard to develop a portfolio I feel proud of that expresses who I am.

My favorite art class so far has been…

actually any of my 3D media related classes, but especially Jewelry with Prof. Heidi Schmidt and ceramics with Prof. Mark Chuck. I never expected to enjoy 3D media as much as I do now, as I used to be primarily a 2D artist when I first started college.

When I am not in class…

I like to read, play video games, and work on my own artwork. I am also often at work, either at the Study Grounds or Books-A-Million, fueling my coffee and/or book addiction.

The coolest thing I have done at Marywood so far was…

being a part of Freshmen Orientation Team at Marywood in the summer of 2023! It was so fun to be a part of the first experience the incoming class would have had with Marywood in general, and I did my best to be a welcoming figure.

When I graduate…

I hope to be working as an art therapist, either in a college setting or with young adults in general. I want to be a supportive figure during a period full of huge changes and overall chaos.

My favorite music to listen to while making art would be…

a blend. My usual music playlist has a variety of music, including but not limited to rock, metal, pop punk, and alternative music. I like music that is either energetic or has a lot of meaning within its lyrics.

I really enjoy Andy’s varying mediums, but particularly his coiled pot. I remember that this technique can be a bit tricky to do and then he added these swirls throughout the piece as well! I also enjoy how expressive his work is rather than following a particular rule. I hope you all enjoyed this artist and have a safe break! Antío!
