Student Spotlight: Kelsey Green

Welcome back to another artist spotlight! I hope everyone is doing well during this Spring’s midterm season. I’m so happy to be able to take a break from projects and studying to introduce you to this week’s passionate artist. I discovered this week’s artist from my Conceptual Design class last fall semester and really enjoyed the amount of depth she always presented in her work, both visually and emotionally. I’m so glad she included this piece in this week’s post and you can find her other great works on her website, KCGraphics. This passionate artist is…

Kelsey Green

Major: Graphic Design

Minor: Illustration

Year: 2026

Clubs: Zeta Omicron, Kappa Pi and CMYK Club

I am majoring in Art because

I had a different path to finding art than most. I began in Interior Architecture, but found myself yearning to be more creative and be challenged. I have always excelled in school, but art challenges me. I may not have as many tests, but I feel that the projects and work I do within the art department are immensely challenging. It’s funny how life plays out. My grandfather always told me I should do graphic design, but I did not believe him. Now that I am in it, I know I belong!

What excites me most about art is…

that it is everywhere. Many people like to downplay art, but it is in everything! It is on packages, it is on TV, it is in every store and every piece of clothing. Art is amazing, without it, life would be so boring, and the people who hate on artists would be extremely sad. We don’t just make things pretty, we make the world bright!

The kinds of things that inspire me are…

within the things I like to do daily. Sometimes’s it’s music, movies, books, etc. I find inspiration in things that I love. I have a variety of aesthetics that I like. I grew up with parents who loved rock and roll and grandparents who loved old music and vinyl, but I grew up in a tiny town on my family’s farmland. I like to make things that are inspired by grunge, vintage, music, and country. Pinterest is my go-to, and my camera roll is full of inspirational pictures from New York City, Philly, New Jersey, and Newport.

My favorite art class so far has been…

Conceptual and Communication Design class with Prof. Steven Brower . I loved this class because it allowed me to create real things that I might do in my career. We have created board games, book covers, etc. This class challenged my thinking and creativity. Also, Steven is such a fantastic professor. He has real-life experience that he talks about and it excites me to hear about his journey through graphic design. He also is encouraging and has such fantastic critiques.

When I am not in class…

I am family-oriented. If I am not at school or work, I am with them. I am a concert addict too, so my summers are full of concerts and comedy shows. I love baking and decorating cakes. I love the outdoors, hunting, fishing, and shooting. If it is wintertime, I am watching the Eagles with my sister. Go Birds!

The coolest thing I have done at Marywood so far was…

having the opportunity to do a lot of neat things. I work at the university’s Marketing Department and I have been able to help create so many awesome projects with my boss, Carrie Bowen Toomey. I love being a part of Where Creativity Works as the Alumni Stories blogger. However,  I think the coolest thing I have done was changing majors. I love that I am finally in a program where students are valued, encouraged, challenged, and taught by professors who love what they do!

When I graduate…

I am not entirely sure what field of graphic design I want to go into, but I love package design and brand management. I want to own my own company after working for others and gaining experience. In a perfect world, I would have a freelance design company and a crafting company. My grandmother had her own crafting business, and I cannot wait to walk in her shoes one day!

My favorite process to create art would be…

making things for people. I love making things come to life. My mom has a catering company, and I have been lucky enough to help design the website, the logo, the business cards, the stickers, the invoice sheet, and my favorite is the merch. I love making shirts and stickers with her brand on them. I love that I can make something on my computer, cut it with my Cricut, and wear it the next day.

I hope you all enjoyed Kelsey’s artwork! I really enjoy how much she incorporates her life interests and her artistic style of bold colors and contrast. You can really get an understanding of the artist behind these pieces and her opinions on some important topics within the world. Good luck on everyone’s midterms and see you all next time, Zàijiàn!
