Hello readers! It’s me, Sephora, and I’ve been listening to an artist who has plagued my mind since hearing the first note of their EP…
Today I just wanted to talk about Yaelokre and their creative way of telling their character’s story!
Artwork by Yaelokre
”Meadowlark” is a story of four children named The Lark who sing the song of old that The Harkers (sprit-like figures? Gods?) once sang. So far only an EP called “Hayfields” is out which is a prelude.
Hayfields consists of the performances the Lark put on for people as they travel throughout the lands! They seem to be the world’s fairytales and fables. Using music as the main narrative for original characters is so interesting to me, it’s definitely even done before, but I love the way it’s applied here! Even, more so when I watched Yaelokre’s music video for “Harpy Hare” which was all drawn by them!
As I’ve been working and considering ways to go about telling my own characters’ stories, I admire non methods that aren’t the typical comic book, or written book. Work like Yaelokre’s breathes life into characters and makes it feel magical and whimsical!
In a time where AI can sing and draw while the arts are being looked down upon by people who wear dreary colors. It’s nice to see someone using both of their wonderful talents and not only have fantastic execution of an idea but also grow a (very deserved) fanbase around their work!
Yaelokre singlehandedly got me out of a rough patch with art as I’ve started drawing myself and a friend as characters in their world!
The characters in the world wear animal masks, so I found myself searching for references for Tigers and Deer so I could accurately draw the masks. There are many more sketches, but I shouldn’t overflow this page with my current obsessions…
Anyway, I hope you enjoyed my rantings of a lovely artist I now look up to! Stay creative and work on projects no matter how small or big because that’s fun!
Sephora, Out! <3
