I am continuing with my 3rd fall semester at Marywood University as an Illustration major in the Art Department. Recently in my Character Design class, we explored creating characters with shapes.
We studied other famous characters throughout media. We began with reviewing their silhouettes and understanding what basic shapes defined each unique character. The three basic shapes found among the famous characters include: squares, circles, and triangles.
Characters with the basic shape foundations tend to illustrate the following personalities/characteristics.
- Squares: Stubborn, wise, and aggressive. Blocky, stiff, and symmetrical.
- Circles: Flamboyant, jolly, and calm. Round, pudgy, and soft.
- Triangles: spontaneous, bold, and energetic. Slim, Pointed, and flexible
After reviewing basic character shape designs, us students were assigned the task to create three original characters. They must have the same occupations; each possessing a separate shape.
