10 Years of Excellence

Guest Blogger: Sue Jenkins, Associate Professor of Graphic Design

Prof Sue Jenkins: Ten years ago, in 2015, when I designed and built Where Creativity Works as an art recruitment blog, my primary aim was to create an online art community that supported our students in their creative artistic growth and provided general information about our majors for anyone considering studying art at Marywood. And now, ten years later, what began as a simple undergraduate art blog has blossomed into a unique global arts platform of creative expression, connecting our students with art enthusiasts around the world.

As the WhereCreativityWorks.com creator and editor-in-chief, I’ve had the incredible and unique privilege of guiding and witnessing this remarkable journey where budding art majors develop their creative voice and share their unique perspectives studying art at Marywood University in Scranton, Pennsylvania, USA.

You may have heard of Scranton from the TV show, The Office. We have some cute murals around town depicting characters from that show. For anyone unfamiliar with the region, Scranton is in Lackawanna County and considered part of NEPA, the Northeastern Pennsylvania region, as well as part of the Wyoming Valley metropolitan area. The city’s history dates to its incorporation in the 1850s and includes notable events such as the founding of Marywood University in 1915. Today, Scranton offers residents and tourists a walkable downtown with shops and restaurants, architecturally significant buildings, and a thriving music, theatre, and art scene.

At WhereCreativityWorks.com our daily publications run year-round, creating a continuous stream of creative expression, showcasing the vibrant, sometimes stressful, and often excitingly creative and evolving world of student art and professional development. Each post is a curated window into the unique lives, struggles, and accomplishments of our art student bloggers and their emerging careers in the arts.

The heart WhereCreativityWorks.com is truly the student volunteer bloggers who write, for 1, 2, or 3 consecutive semesters about what it’s like to study art in their major at Marywood. To help them with that, my role has always been more than just an editor. I’m also a mentor and a guide who trains and supports them as they develop their written voice and articulate their artistic journeys with personal authenticity.

Celebrating A Milestone

To celebrate reaching our 10-year anniversary in 2025, I curated a special art exhibition called “Where Creativity Works: 10 Years of Excellence” which is now on view in the Kresge Gallery through January 14, 2026. The show is more than just a retrospective with interesting statistics. It’s a living celebration of the faces behind the words and a story of the diversity of artistic expression the site has shared generously over the years.

  • OPENING RECEPTION: Saturday, November 15, 2025 from 2-4 PM
  • EXHIBITION DATES: Nov 15, 2025 – Jan 14, 2026
  • KRESGE GALLERY: Daily 9AM-6PM
  • #10yrsOfExcellence #WhereCreativityWorks #MarywoodArt

The show highlights what makes this website truly special, which is its global reach and breadth of topics by so many voices over the past 10 years. In fact, we’ve had 133 student bloggers writing on 17 different topics! Despite originating from an art department at a small liberal arts university in a relatively small town in the USA, our readership spans continents, proving that art is a universal language that transcends borders. Our student bloggers, who each study in different majors and minors in the arts, have shared everything from studio struggles to breakthrough moments, including experiences in our local art scene like First Friday Scranton and Scranton Fringe Festival, as well as global experiences like study abroad, and classroom aha moments like getting the glazing on a ceramics piece just right and attending an opening reception in one of our four beautiful campus art galleries. Our art facilities are pretty amazing. Did I mention that Marywood University is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD)?

A Sincere Thanks

As I look back on ten years of WhereCreativityWorks.com, my heart is full and I’m happy to celebrate the blog, the bloggers, our readers and supporters, and the beautiful global community it has created to connect and inspire each other through the arts. To everyone who has been part of this journey, thank you. Here’s to another decade of creativity, creative expression, global connection, and artistic exploration! ~Prof Sue Jenkins
