2 in 1 Wood Carving

Earlier this semester in my 3D Design class we were working on “2 in 1” wood carving sculptures. This was a project that took quite a bit of time and effort. There were parts of the process that I enjoyed and parts that I did not. Overall I think the piece came out pretty nicely, I’m happy with the finished product.

I honestly did not enjoying the carving. I have never done any carving in wood before so this was a quite difficult. There wasn’t much direction given so I had to figure out how to carve the wood myself which made it a bit extra frustration. I am very used to figuring out how to do things myself. I have taught myself have to do many different things and I very much so have the attitude that if given enough time I can figure anything out. For this project there was a quicker deadline than I would have liked with having to figure out how to crave it on my own. I have also stated multiple times before that I am a very impatient artists and for this part of the project I was vey impatient which made it harder.

There were other parts of the project that I did like. I do actually enjoy using the power tools in the woodshop so I did like cutting and sanding down the bigger shapes/forms of this project. I also thoroughly enjoy painting especially when I get to paint something out of wood. I love being able to mix different colors and pair them together to create a beautiful piece. For pieces like this I feel adding to paint really just brings the whole piece to life and I love being able to watch the transformation happen.

My concept for this was ocean/beach themed. One part of the piece was a wave and the other was a shoreline with shells. These are two sides of the same coin that are vastly different. The crashing wave of the ocean is rough, its the middle of the vast sea, it can be dangerous, and its the only thing there is. The shoreline is usually calmer, its part of the land, its seen as a safe point, its made up of a bunch of different things (sand, water, shells, etc.). I also absolutely love the beach and see. I also feel the most at home when I’m by the water, where I can feel the sand beneath my feet and smell the salt in the air. I like to include what’s important to me into my art and the beach is important to me, it feels like home.
