An Update on “Essence of Painting”

Back in November, I wrote about a painting that I was working on in my Advanced Painting course. In that post, I mentioned that it may have been the final product and I really didn’t think I would end up adding anything more to the piece. However, upon critique I ended up feeling really disappointed in myself. There were some obvious areas I needed to add to and improve on that I had just barely started to explore and I was already calling it “done”. So, I spent a few more hours working and reworking the contrast, line, texture, and color throughout the piece. Looking back at what I would have been calling complete looks like a total work-in-progress compared to the painting I am sharing today.

Above is the progress point I left off at. The negative space wasn’t altered enough, darks and lights weren’t pushed, and the sense of space and depth I had originally hoped for weren’t present in the way I would have liked them to be.

Below is the product after spending only a few more hours bringing this painting to life. Next time I am feeling like I have hit a wall creatively, I will look back at this moment. Note to self: “you can always make a painting better if you put in the time and effort!!!”
