Hi, I’m Emma! This is my first post with Where Creativity Works as the new art therapy student blogger. I am so excited to start my blogging experience, and I hope you all enjoy it as well! As an undergrad Art Therapy student at Marywood, I get the absolute privilege to meet with different populations around campus and make art with them!
On March 28, 2026, the art therapy and music therapy students collaborated together to make an exciting experience for the Deutsch Institute. The Deutsch Institute is a non-profit organization in Scranton, PA, designed to help those with special needs get access to resources and opportunities to help with their health and well-being.
The students’ directive for this activity was to take materials around the studio and create instruments that we all could play with the music therapy students. The instruments we had were a guitar, kazoo, rain stick, hand drum, xylophone, and tambourine.

The materials we used to make all these instruments were a tissue box, toilet paper/paper towel rolls, rubber bands, foam plates/bowls, rice, beads, and straws. It was so nice to see how everyone made various instruments from materials that can often be found around the house.
This hands-on art/music therapy experience was so special because the Deutsch Institute participants made each instrument their own and put their personality on it with their own decorations. Playing with the music therapy students also made this experience so special. They got to play their instruments with the music therapy and art therapy students, creating a rhythm around the room.
I am so grateful that I had the opportunity to spend time with the Deutsch Institute. Overall, this was something that I really enjoyed and would participate in again! That’s all for my first post, thank you for reading!
