Artworks in Jujutsu Kaisen Opening

Recently, the new opening for Jujutsu Kaisen was released and it looks marvelous! One thing that caught me off guard while watching it was the overt references to other works of art. Although I did not recognize every single one of them, I knew in my heart they were definitely referencing SOMETHING!!! Here is the opening if you’d like to watch it:

I slowly went through the opening and screenshotted as many Art references as I could find. With the help of some threads, I’ve compiled most of the identifiable references from the opening.

Two Sleeping Children – Peter Paul Rubens (1612 – 13)

Dead Mother I – Egon Schiele (1910)

Madame Monet and Child – Claude Monet (1875)

The Scream – Edvard Munch (1893)

The Kiss – Gustav Klimt (1907 – 1908)

The Death of Marat – Jacques-Louis David (1793)

Ophelia – John Everett Millais (1851– 1852)

Kashiwade No Hanoshi – Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1830-1832)

POSSIBLY Takiyasha the Witch and the Skeleton Spectre – Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1844)

I personally think Takiyasha the Witch and the Skeleton Spectre fits a lot better for this frame than any other painting mentioned.

POSSIBLY The Gray Forest – Max Ernst (1927)

Pink Floyd – Dark Side of the Moon (1973)

Tokyo Y-Junctions – Tadanori Yokoo (2009?)

PROBABLY Ghost In The Shell – Stand Alone Complex (2002)

When I saw this I wasn’t completely sure what it was referencing but I personally feel like this is a reference to Egyptian Gods (or Egypt in general) and Jesus Christ. The brown bars on the right remind me of the crown of thorns. There’s a pyramid on the bottom left. The landscape on the right reminds me of an Egyptian sunset on the sand dunes. The bird on the left reminds me of some kind of wise God? I’m not completely sure and no one else has really mentioned it but this is definitely referencing something. Let me know what you think!

It was super cool seeing all these references to famous works!! Being able to recognize these from my art history classes made me feel so educated (even though I really don’t know what much). From what I can tell, a lot of these references have the same thing in common: they are some of the greatest works ever. Most of these are really iconic and highly regarded for being classic pieces of work.

I also enjoyed these references because it showed me some new artworks I hadn’t seen before.
