I am majoring in Art because I’ll be honest, I didn’t know what I wanted to do when I grew up until I was a senior in high school. I enjoyed making art, and I was pretty tech savvy, so I was told to go into graphic design because it is profitable. Once I got into my sophomore year of college, I started to love graphic design because it is somewhat artsy, but there’s also a technical side that satisfies the type-A part of my brain.

The kinds of things that inspire me are… sports have definitely been my biggest inspiration in my professional life so far. When I started watching sports and interacting with the marketing and social media side, I learned that design isn’t just visuals, but an entire system regarding carefully made decisions to communicate.

My art favorite class so far was Communication and Conceptual Design I and II with Steven Brower. Out of all my classes, I feel this set of classes prepared me the most for being a graphic designer. I got a sense of working on a variety of projects for a practical use. I learned the whole process of a project, from research and sketching to revising and presenting my work. I received a lot of valuable feedback and continued to refine my pieces after the critique.

When I am not in class, I’m watching basketball or hockey or listening to music. However, I do have a guilty pleasure for shopping and scrolling on Pinterest.

The coolest thing I have done at Marywood so far was take a jewelry class. I discovered I love to wear rings once I learned how to make my own. I got to use a soldering torch, which was my first time working with an open flame.

When I graduate I would love to design for sports teams and musicians. Lately, I have been getting into branding so I wouldn’t mind branding for a fun business.

I would recommend the Art program at Marywood it’s very tight-knit and personalized, so you’re getting the support you need. The professors really care about you and want you to succeed.

What excites me most about Art is that feeling when your design is starting to make sense after hours of frustration and trying to put pieces together in a way that works.
