I chose Marywood because because Marywood provided the opportunity to play volleyball and get a degree in the arts. I fell in love with the campus the first time I visited and always knew that I wanted to go to school here. One of my favorite places on campus is the Insalaco Studio Arts building. I think that the facility is gorgeous and provides more than enough space to explore your creativity. My second favorite place would have to be the gym, of course.
I am majoring in Art because I have grown up loving to draw and paint my whole life. I come from a big family that encourages creativity and has always helped me to exceed my own expectations. In high school I had an art teacher who left a huge impression on me which inspired me to want to be an art teacher myself. This teacher made me excited for school, and she always had me so engaged and excited to come to her class. I finished all her assignments early and was always begging for my assignments.
When I’m not in class, I’m studying in my room, lifting in the gym, going to zumba class, and working on my art projects. My favorite subject is art of course, so I spend a lot of time studying art history and reviewing my notes and flipping through pages of my art books. A lot of the work I see inspires me to want to develop my drawing and painting skills, which influences some of my own personal projects. And then of course I love being active on the volleyball court, in the gym and now while doing zumba. Exercising helps me relieve stress and always makes me feel really great about myself afterwards.
So far, my favorite art class at Marywood was 3D Design because this has been the first time I’ve been introduced to creating work on a three-dimensional plane and I was really surprised because I did not think that I would have liked it. I was worried that I would not be able to think in a three dimensional mindset and that everything I would create would only be successful from a two dimensional point of view. I think that transitioning between 2D and 3D classes encourages a lot of creativity and helps strengthen that part of an artist’s brain.
The coolest thing I’ve done at Marywood so far was play in every volleyball game of my freshman season. As a freshman playing a collegiate sport, it is not common for first year students to get to be a part of the excitement and thrill of the game. The best game of my first Marywood volleyball season was definitely our five set home-opener against Keystone college. The energy and the rush was like nothing else.
When I graduate I hope to further my education in graduate school and pursue a master’s degree in art education so that I may teach secondary art education and coach a high school volleyball team. In case you hadn’t noticed, art and volleyball make up my life and the perfect, harmonious future for me would be if I were an art teacher who got to coach volleyball everyday.
I’d recommend the Art program at Marywood because there are so many opportunities to get involved as an artist and all of the professors are extremely knowledgeable about the school, about art, and they treat each student as an artist no matter their level of ability. Not only are there opportunities on campus (for example, being a blogger for Where Creativity Works!), but there are also a lot of opportunities as an artist in this area. Next year (2020) I will be the featured artist of the month and showcasing my work at Zummo’s Cafe in April. Students can also apply to be part of AFA Gallery, First Friday Scranton, and so much more… the possibilities and opportunities at Marywood are endless!
