The torso project is coming to an end in sculpture, the majority of us just have to figure out what the bases for them are going to be.
We were able to complete our molds and put them together to then pour cement into them. Since we poured cement our molds were “scrap molds” that we had to chisel away from the cement. This process took a decent bit of time. It was a little difficult to find a good place to start. Some pieces came off in big chunks while others were little pieces at a time. Once we got down to just little chunks that needed to be removed we had to be careful to not take out chunks of the cement with it.

Once that was all done we had to put all the scraps in a bin and then we had to carefully chisel away at the cement to smooth out the edges and transitions. For mine this took a significant amount of time because my mold was four pieces so there were four creases that had to be smoothed out. After chiseling away all these edges I had to use a Dremel hand held drill to really smooth out the edges and make them look nice and clean.

Once that was complete I covered my torso in wax and let the wax sit on it for about two days. After the two days I used a buff attachment head on the Dremel to buff out the torso giving it a smooth texture and a tiny bit of a shine.

Now all that is left of for me to figure out what base I will have for this piece. I have a couple of ideas but in order to know what they are and what the base will end up being you’ll have to come to our Kresge Gallery Opening on November 7th, more details to come soon!
