My drawing process is pretty different from what I’m learning about in my Drawing I course this semester. I’m not used to working over the entire drawing all at once. I usually pick a spot on my paper (most of the time in the top left corner, but sometimes I’ll start with whatever is the most interesting) and work my way down. I like finishing little objects/pieces of a drawing as I go instead of working on the whole entire thing simultaneously. Mainly because I find it hard to stay interested in things for too long, working on the parts I find most interesting right away usually helps me keep my interest and actually finish the piece.
But, with that being said, I honestly don’t hate this process, it’s just not what I’m used to yet. I’m also not used to only using charcoal. I just started incorporating charcoal into my graphite pieces and as much as I love it, it’s definitely harder to only use that one medium for an entire piece.
I’m pretty excited to continue this class and learn more about drawing and composition. In high school none of my art classes really taught drawing in this way, we were pretty much just given prompts and that was it. No instruction or no/little guidance from the teacher. So I’m really loving this course and the helpful guidance from the professor. I think this will really help my art improve and teach me a lot of valuable things! I’m already seeing some improvement from our first “test run” still life we did on the first day of class to now, our first project.

As you can see from our first test run still life I only focused on the part that was the most interesting to me- the fabric. And completely ignored the other details and objects around it. (In my defense that fabric is layered in a really cool way.)
And now in our first project I’m really trying to focus on each object at the same time instead of just one. I do still find myself obsessing over the smaller details, I don’t like leaving things “unfinished” even if I go back to it at a later point. I just really prefer to “finish” a section, even if it’s a small section, than leave it unrendered. But hopefully I’ll break that mindset as it does make my drawings take forever to render! I still need to adjust some values and proportions but I’m super happy with how this is turning out!
