GUEST POST BY PROF STEPHEN COLLEY, AS TOLD TO ART STUDENT SIDNEY SHURGIN
Professor Stephen Colley, a renowned sculpture teacher at Marywood University, is not just an educator but also a visionary artist whose work inspires both his students and the community. His passion for sculpture is evident in his large-scale projects, which often pay tribute to the brave heroes who have served our country. Let’s delve into some of his recent and ongoing projects that showcase his dedication and artistic prowess.
Honoring Heroes: “Kneeling Soldier with Bomb Dog”
One of Professor Colley’s most recent and impactful projects is the “Kneeling Soldier with Bomb Dog.” This life-sized sculpture depicts a soldier and his loyal service dog companion, capturing a moment of quiet strength and camaraderie. The project, which took approximately a year to complete, involved intricate processes such as mold making, wax work, welding, and patina application. The sculpture is now proudly displayed in the learning commons at Marywood University, serving as a testament to what students can achieve in the field of sculpture and inspiring future artists to pursue their passions.
Professor Colley’s goal with this installation is to inspire students and instill a sense of pride in the sculpture department. By showcasing what can be achieved through dedication and skill, he hopes to encourage aspiring artists to explore their creative potential.
The Art of Perseverance: “No Man Left Behind”
Following the completion of the “Kneeling Soldier with Bomb Dog,” Professor Colley has embarked on another ambitious project titled “No Man Left Behind.” This seven-foot-tall sculpture portrays a brave soldier carrying his wounded comrade to safety, symbolizing the unbreakable bond and selflessness of our military personnel. The project highlights the iterative nature of sculpture, as Colley has revisited and revised certain aspects of the piece throughout its creation. This ongoing process of refinement underscores the artist’s commitment to perfection and the endless possibilities for improvement in art.
A Tribute to Unsung Heroes: “Vietnam Nurse Tribute”
In addition to his current project, Professor Colley is already brainstorming his next endeavor: the “Vietnam Nurse Tribute.” This larger-than-life sculpture will honor a nurse holding a wounded soldier on the battlefield, paying tribute to the often-overlooked yet crucial role of nurses in conflicts. Inspired by the hard work and dedication of nurses throughout history, this project aims to highlight their importance and the sacrifices they make to aid our forces.
Inspiring the Next Generation
Professor Colley’s work is not just about creating stunning sculptures; it’s about inspiring the next generation of artists. His dedication to his craft and his commitment to honoring those who have served make him a true asset to Marywood University and the broader artistic community. Through his teaching and his art, he continues to motivate and inspire students to pursue their creative passions and make a meaningful impact on the world.
