NECROWAVE

Indie games are always on my radar because they tend to have open arms towards creativity – without the limits of exclusively seeking profit.

On my explore page, I ran into an account called @arfhisthewizard who is developing a game called Necrowave. This is a 2D platformer featuring zombies and mines. The protagonist of this game is a zombie named Milo.

[Editor’s note: A 2D platformer is a video game genre where the player controls a character moving through a two-dimensional (flat, side-view) environment, with the primary challenge being to jump across platforms, obstacles, and gaps while avoiding hazards and enemies.]

One of the points of interest behind this game based on the reels I saw was the color palette. Because the creator is colorblind, they used a primarily blue color palette. To help create visual clarity, the creator focused on contrast, silhouette, and shape.

Interestingly, the game reacts to your movements! So environments change depending on what you do. If you jump to avoid fire, it may move to damage you. Mimes within the game also act as platforms. If one is creating a wall with his hands, that wall becomes real. It’s a cool concept that explores the potential of a platformer.

The creator was inspired by Hollownight, a popular platformer that recently released its sequel, Silksong

If you’re interested in playing the game, you can join the Necrowave Discord server and get access to the demo and updates.

The Instagram account also details much of the creative process. This ranges from gameplay, works in progress, animation, etc.

It’s important to support small creators and projects to help foster their success and encourage creativity. If you’re looking for more indie games to play, check itch io, Newgrounds, and Steam!
