New Glaze Combinations

Hi everyone! Hope you’re doing well. Here in Scranton, we’ve been having some beautiful weather. Hopefully, I’ll be able to get outside and do some watercolor painting. I’m thrilled to share some exciting results from the latest glaze kiln. These might be my best pieces yet! I experimented a lot with the glazes I mixed last semester, testing various combinations. I’ll show you my favorites here, but more photos are on my Instagram!

First, I’m going to show you what the three glazes I used for these combinations look like on their own. Even though there is a lot of variation, I only used those three glazes. Because of the order in which I applied the glaze, the results were different. Here’s the base glazes.

Now, I’ll show you the pieces! This first piece looks nothing like I expected, but it turned out gorgeous. I applied the teal glaze first, then sprayed the lighter blue on top. I love the color at the top of the vase and would use this combination again.

Next, this mug is beyond what I could have expected. For this one, I applied the dark blue glaze first, then dipped the top half into the teal. I also applied an extra dip of the teal around the rim to encourage dripping. I was shocked at how this combination turned out. I wasn’t expecting the shade of blue around the rim or the shade of purple towards the bottom, but I’m obsessed with them. Again, I’ll definitely be doing this combination again.

Finally, my favorite piece from the kiln was this small jar. I applied the dark blue first, then dipped the top rim into the lighter blue. Again, I added extra light blue glaze that dripped around the surface to encourage dripping. I absolutely love the seafoam green color that came out of this combination. I think this would look stunning on a taller vessel. I’m already planning on which piece I want to attempt this combination on!

Well, that’s all I have for this week’s post! I know it was a bit short, but I have a lot of exciting things coming up in the ceramics studio, so stay tuned! I hope you enjoyed! Stay creative 🙂
