I hope everyone’s been well during these cold, windy, snowy days! I’ve been hard at work on a myriad of projects, but, as I’m the sculpture blogger, I’ll show my continued work on my unicorn relief for my mixed media class.

Ideally, the unicorn is more clear now. I had to hike up the contrast on the image so you can see all my little details. The clay doesn’t photograph too well and needed a little help 🙂 I have two little squirrels that are currently pretty hard to see. It’s not exactly how I want the finished product to look, but once I cast the piece in plaster, I’ll be able to refine the details. The idea with this piece is to get just enough detail in the clay version, without there being too much. This way, as I trim back the plaster mould, I have less to trim so that when I pour the positive into the mould (the mould is made of plaster, but I will be pouring more into the mould and removing it to make a “copy” of the original clay piece) It does not get stuck or, worse, break.
We just poured the mould last class, so I was able to do a bit of trimming (aka undercuts), but I probably have a bit more to do before I start pouring more plaster. The ideal for this piece is to make three copies of it. Then I sorta have free reign to paint it a few different ways and detail them differently. I’m excited to get to that point!
A short blog today, just some little updates on this project so far.
More to come!
