Hello, it is hard to believe that I am already more than half way through my fourth semester at Marywood University. That said, I am currently on spring break and I took this opportunity to reflect back on the first half of the semester. Thus far, my favorite class this semester is Digital Illustration which is a required course as an Illustration major in the Marywood Art Department.
Digital Landscapes:
Probably one of the favorite techniques I added to my creative arsenal in Digital illustration class is how to digitally illustrate a landscape.
My professor gave us an in-depth demonstration in creating a landscape. Of course there is always more than one way to skin a cat; however, the method my professor showcased goes as followed:
- Pick your palette and desired brush.
- Begin with the farthest part of the background (usually sky and horizon line)
- start with lighter, neutral colors, and the brush on 50% roundness
- As you progress forward, slightly darken your value and saturation, increase the roundness of your brush, and work on new layers to keep your work separated and organized.
- Add light and shadow. Shadow is a neutral complementary at a lower opacity, and light is a value close to white with lower opacity.
- Add any other details. Note, your details are should be less rendered farther back as opposed to those in the foreground.
Gifting My Knowledge:
After the class, I was inspired to create a digital illustration for my wonderful Mother. My family just celebrated her birthday!

WRAP UP:
Overall, the first half of my spring semester was an insightful learning experience, and I anticipate the same energy in the second half of the semester. Also… my mom absolutely loved her present!
