This week has been a week of crocheting and planning for me… and doing “real work” so I have money for more yarn, but that’s no fun to write about. I’m preparing for my master plan of having many things to sell at craft fairs by the start of the fall semester. So far, so good… in that I’ve only crocheted commissions and gifts and have prepared nothing for the actual crochet business besides buying yarn. This situation has taught me a few things.
This week, I created (or, at least, fully realized) a list of all the projects I plan on creating/potential things I want to make. I’ll write the yarns I decide to use and where they are from, as well as what I spent on them, to calculate prices later. I’m hoping this will be useful later since I tend to forget what yarns came from where. Which kinda brings me to my next thing. I need to plan before I buy.

I bought a lot of yarn in bulk, but I did so before I knew what I’d be making, so I just got colors I liked in semi-random amounts. Now, when you’re buying yarn online, it’s a bit difficult to know exactly how far it’ll go, even if you know how many meters there are and the weight. You also don’t know exactly what texture it’ll be. But I still really should have planned out my yarns. My quest for the next few days will be sorting out what I’m doing with the yarns I have and figuring out what yarn I still need to get.
This past week I worked on a bunny I was commissioned. The pattern work went smoothly, and I’m noticing I make fewer mistakes as I grow more accustomed to working from written patterns and working in the round. I did learn that I need to practice my embroidery skills. The bunny is blue. Now this is partially because it’s for a baby and that’s cute, but it’s also because I figured I would need like 3 skeins, and I seem to have gotten two of each of the colors I liked on the website… like a fool would.
I look forward to seeing how this list I implemented works out. As you can see, there are many projects on the list, so I’ll assuredly have some thoughts over the coming weeks as I work on such things. Plus some sketches and the such. More things to come!
