Ughhh

Hiya! I hope everyone’s break has been restful. I, unfortunately, have been hard at work over break. The good news is, I can show what I’ve been up to. Not much 3D to share this time, but honestly, it’ll be nice to show the 2D work for all my classes so far.

Digital Illustration

I figure I’ll just separate this blog post into categories for ease of writing and reading. For digital illustration, we have an ongoing theme to all of our assignments. We need consistent characters, and we’re essentially going through the creative process of making a show, movie, video game, or some other media with a story like that. I’ve been getting over my “fear” (it’s not really a fear, I just like them less) of digital platforms. I’m a traditional artist at heart. I’ll refrain from showing my whole character development process, but I will show their finished designs and their finished environments!

I’m going with a story with a unicorn (shocker) who discovers sick animals. She follows them to a pond, and finds a whole different world, with this fun little creature. I’m having fun with it, so we’ll see how it turns out.

General Illustration 2

In general illustration, we’ve mainly been working on the assignment to create a board/card game, which of course took a while, but the assignment before that was to create a piece based on a national day. I saw that national cat day and national internet day were the same day, which felt fitting with cats’ hold on the internet. The whole idea reminded me of how my cat likes to chase my mouse cursor (cats like to chase mice, what can I say?), so I depicted such a thing 🙂

The screen of the computer was collaged in, but I drew the surrounding screen and everything else. It was hard to get it to meld together and look decent, but I’m pretty happy with how it turned out. I ended up needing to take a screenshot of my artwork so that the colors display properly. I don’t understand how something that looks like this in preview on my mac can look so dark as soon as I drop the exact same image elsewhere. This cat understands the inner machinations of computers better than I do, I guess.

I figure I’ll also show an example playing card while I’m here. I designed the cards for an alien trading card game 🙂 I hope to have a picture of the cards in play soon.

Sculpture

So, you’ve all seen my sculpture works and how they’ve progressed, so I’ll share the updates on my cat. I polished the eyes up a bit more and such, but nothing too crazy. I’m probably going to mess with it immediately upon being back from break though.

Motion Graphics

Since motion graphics is pretty much all video, I don’t think I can really include much of my work from the class. Upon further thought and investigation, this website has a video feature… so I’ll give that a little go! I’ve done a whole bunch of things for motion graphics and I don’t know how much I can add to this, but the first real video we made was all done in Photoshop. It’s the elements of design.

We had to make a video with the theme “Stay Active, Stay Healthy”. The professor suggested “something like that video of Saquon Barkley jumping over that guy.” I knew not what he was talking about, but my boyfriend showed me the moment in question, and I was interested in rotoscoping over it for sure. I kinda just ‘Take on Me’d it.

We had to make a little hype video for the Olympics as well. I saw their logo and noticed it has the same amount of strokes as the given soundbite has… swells? Flourishes? Whatever the dramatic noises are called. This was also in photoshop, but we were about to move on… to InDesign, a widely renowned animation platform of course.

Here’s a link to the InDesign animated Moths infographic I made. It was a very extensive process, but it was pretty fun! If you hover your cursor over the moths, their wings open 🙂

We’ve been making videos in Adobe Premiere lately, but those are longer than the others, so I won’t share them here. I’m pretty happy with my work in the class so far, though! I’m not well-versed in any animation outside of frame by frame, so it’s been quite a learning curve.

The current assignment is to make a short video based on an article. One of the options was an article about Alysa Liu popularizing the song “Stateside.” There’s been a trend online with people rotoscoping her dance at the beginning, so y0u can kinda see where I’m going with this.

I’ll likely share the finished product in my next blog with my 3D stuff, but I hope you’ve enjoyed a little taste of may work so far this semester.

More to come!
