For a Christmas gift to my brother, I wanted to paint him a bright landscape with blues and oranges to hang on his wall! The canvas size was a 12 x 16, and this was one of my first landscapes I have done with acrylic. I used cheap craft paint for this entire painting as a way to show you can still make great work no matter the materials used!
Starting this painting, I knew I wanted to include snowy trees and mountains. Before color blocking on the canvas, I went digital and did a quick sketch of what I intended my layout to be on Procreate. As I started painting there was multiple times I completely wiped away my canvas and restarted. My color pallet, style, and layout was changing consistently, and eventually I landed one I enjoyed.
I took an approach of a more pastel vibrant color theme, with a fantasy style. I did not want the painting to define realism, but rather instead a surreal version of my winter scene. I used lots of line work in this piece, along with layering the paints to show exact shades I was looking for.
As my final version approached I varnished it with a glossy Liquitex, and signed my name with a silver paint pen. I really liked my final result, and I liked the process of changes of this painting along the way.
