Bernadette Fertal (Class of 2024)

Blogger Role: On Campus Art News

Major: Art Therapy

Minor: Art History

I chose Marywood because I was really impressed by the art department and felt immediately welcomed by the professors, staff, and students I met when touring and when I first arrived as a student. When I first toured campus, my dad and I got lost and there were several wonderful people who went out of their way to help us find our way to our car. The sense of community I felt made me want to enroll here and join the Marywood family!

I am majoring in Art because art has always been extremely important to me in many different ways, and I want to share my love for art with other people and help them use art to heal, grow, and find even more enjoyment out of life.

When I’m not in class, I’m hanging out with my friends, working on a new art project, or taking care of my many plants.

So far, my favorite art class at Marywood was Art History I. I have always loved learning about the history of art and was so inspired by the classes I’ve taken at Marywood with Dr. Irwin I decided to minor in art history.

The coolest thing I’ve done at Marywood so far was give tours of campus as an Admissions Ambassador! I love introducing prospective students to everything our university has to offer and help make the transition to their new environment as comfortable as possible.

When I graduate I am not quite certain what direction I would like to go yet, but I think I would really like to work with kids as an art therapist. I can see myself working at a school or a hospital, and maybe someday opening my own practice!

I’d recommend the Art program at Marywood because it is full of talented and devoted professors and so many amazing students that make up a really special community. The art program at Marywood is so welcoming and has really helped me grow as an artist.
